We are very sorry to report the news of our dear friend Dave Kendall passing. Last DJ Jason heard from him, he was living in Indonesia and working in Shanghai. The details of his death have yet to be confirmed. He was 63.

While most of the world will remember him from his time as an MTV DJ famous for creating and hosting the alternative show ‘120 minutes’, those of us that were in the NYC club scene will remember him as an announcer and DJ for the massive alternative event, Communion, which was every Tuesday at Limelight nightclub for many years (eventually becoming a Thursday event yet years later). Dave Kendall was a pioneer in forwarding alternative music. In this post, below, are some of the flyers and village voice newspaper ads for nights at Communion.

In addition to his TV and Nightclub work, Dave was an accomplished writer and editor. He was involved with the first Alternative Music website, AlterWorld, back in the early days of the web. AlterWorld was the first music website to offer streaming. DJ Jason, who knew next to nothing about computers then, did some temporary work for him at the time with AlterWorld and remembers Dave’s jovial good attitude and remarkable patience. His beneficent outlook and great positivity will be missed.
